Variabilities in childhood cardiovascular risk factors and incident diabetes in adulthood: The Bogalusa Heart Study
Diabetes Care Jul 25, 2019
Du T, et al. - In this investigation with 1,718 participants, researchers studied if cardiovascular risk factor (CVRF) variability during childhood was related to diabetes in later life. They enrolled candidates who took part in the Bogalusa Heart Study and were measured at least four times during childhood (aged 4 to 19 years). Investigators found that increased variabilities of BMI and HDL cholesterol in childhood are important risk factors for diabetes development, regardless of diverse risk factors, which might give new insights into the childhood origin of adult-onset diabetes. Other variabilities of CVRF, including systolic/diastolic blood pressure, total cholesterol, triglycerides, and LDL cholesterol, were not significantly linked to diabetes after adjustments for potential confounding variables.
