Vancomycin powder use in fractures at high risk of surgical site infection
Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma Dec 24, 2020
Qadir R, Costales T, Coale M, et al. - Researchers retrospectively analyzed all fractures operatively treated from January 2011 to February 2015 with the aim to determine if surgical-site infection after open reduction and internal fixation of bicondylar tibial plateau, tibial pilon, and calcaneus fractures reduced in correlation with using intrawound vancomycin powder. They included 583 high-risk fractures, of which 35 received topical vancomycin powder. Significantly lower infection rate was observed in correlation with using vancomycin powder compared with a control group of fractures treated without vancomycin powder. Findings thereby support the role of vancomycin powder in lowering surgical-site infection rates after fracture fixation.
