Value of clinical features to differentiate refractory epilepsy from mimics: A prospective longitudinal cohort study
European Journal of Neurology Apr 30, 2018
Labate A, et al. - Refractory epilepsy (rE) is often misdiagnosed, so researchers sought to determine the main clinical/laboratory factors with the intention of obtaining an alternative diagnosis in patients referred for rE. Enrollees had a diagnosis of rE and underwent a comprehensive neurological, neuropsychiatric and cardiological evaluation, and were observed for least 1 year after study entry. Results detected rE mimics who appeared to be at high-risk of morbidity and mortality. Data indicated that rE starting in adulthood ought to raise a high suspicion of cardiac syncope. It was also determined that brain MRI was accurate in differentiating rE from other conditions.
