Validation of two case definitions to identify pressure ulcers using hospital administrative data
BMJ Open Sep 13, 2017
Ho C, et al. - A validation was conducted of the hospital discharge abstract database (DAD) in recording pressure ulcers against nursing consult reports. This study also estimated the prevalence of pressure ulcers in Alberta, Canada in DAD. It was determined that DAD underestimated the prevalence of pressure ulcer. Several codes recorded the pressure ulcers in DAD. Hence, the case definition with more codes captured more pressure ulcer cases. It could be beneficial for monitoring facility trends. Nevertheless, low sensitivity indicated that this data source could not be accurate for determining the overall prevalence, and ought to be carefully compared with other prevalence studies.
