Validation of the normalized laryngeal constriction ratio in normal and disordered swallowing

The Laryngoscope Aug 30, 2019

Miller M, et al. - Since the timing of laryngeal vestibule closure (LVC) is important for airway protection during swallowing, however, it is unknown whether the extent of LVC contributes to airway protection, researchers validated the extent of LVC through a measure called laryngeal constriction ratio (LCR). On 38 stroke participants and 40 healthy controls, a retrospective analysis of videofluoroscopic swallows was carried out. Through the Penetration–Aspiration Scale score, airway invasion severity was derived. For this investigation, they analyzed 649 videofluoroscopic swallows. Findings suggested that the normalized LCR may be a valid measure of fluoroscopic surrogate for LVC and, moreover, airway compromise during swallowing. By examining spatial measurements in the laryngeal vestibule during safe and unsafe swallows, the LCR offers guidance for further research to allow a critical examination of the closure-related physiology to accurately identify and treat abnormalities during swallowing.
