Tayob N, et al. - Through a cohort of 38,431 patients with cirrhosis, the contributors targetted to access the early detection of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) through surveillance via ultrasonography, with or without measurement of serum level of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP). A positive result leading to a follow-up evaluation by computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging was identified in HCC screening. Hepatocellular carcinoma early detection screening algorithm in the detection of HCC in patients with cirrhosis of any etiology evaluated at Veterans affairs medical centers was validated. A modest but useful advantage of the algorithm over AFP alone was concluded.
