Valganciclovir is beneficial in children with congenital cytomegalovirus and isolated hearing loss
The Journal of Pediatrics Apr 02, 2018
Pasternak Y, et al. - The efficacy of antiviral treatment were examined by the authors for infants with congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV) with isolated sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). During this study, the hearing status was assessed for infants who had been followed for >1 year. It was noted that among 329 infants treated for cCMV, 59 (18%) were born with isolated SNHL and out of the 80 affected ears at baseline, 68.8% displayed improvement and only 2.5% cases deteriorated. Yielded data reported that infants born with isolated SNHL due to cCMV benefited from prolonged antiviral treatment. Prominent improvement in hearing status and no deterioration of unaffected ears at baseline were found among these children (and ears). Therefore, evidence was gained with regard to the benefits of antiviral treatment in these children.
