Vaginal progesterone treatment for the prevention of preterm birth and intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy: A case-control study
European Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Reproductive Biology Aug 28, 2020
Zipori Y, Bachar G, Farago N, et al. - Researchers here examined whether women receiving long-term daily vaginal progesterone, indicated for a short cervical length, exhibit altered incidence of intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP). They conducted a matched 1:3 case-control study including pregnant women with the diagnosis of ICP as cases and women without ICP as controls. Relative to the control group, the ICP group had higher use of vaginal progesterone throughout pregnancy. Observations suggest increased risk of developing ICP among pregnant women treated with long-term vaginal progesterone preparations for the prevention of preterm birth. They recommend an early consultation and diagnostic test to confirm or rule-out ICP in the presence of pruritus during pregnancy.
