Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty vs CN XII stimulation for treatment of obstructive sleep apnea: A single institution experience
American Journal of Otolaryngology Mar 08, 2018
Shah J, et al. - The outcomes in cases having moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) who underwent hypoglossal nerve stimulation (HNS) surgery (Inspire Medical Systems) were compared to those who underwent traditional airway reconstructive surgery, specifically uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP). In spite of the fact that, for the subjects with moderate to severe OSA with CPAP intolerance, both traditional surgery and HNS were seen to be effective treatments, results suggested that in normalizing the AHI to <5 in the majority of patients, HNS was “curative”. HNS therapy provided an excellent objective improvement in outcome measures for selected patients.
