Utilization pattern and service settings of palliative care for patients with metastatic non–small-cell lung cancer

Huo J, et al. - Among Medicare beneficiaries with newly diagnosed, metastatic non–small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC), researchers used the Cochran-Armitage test to analyze temporal trends in palliative care utilization and the temporal shift in palliative care service settings. They used the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results-Medicare–linked database and identified 69,414 patients with NSCLC. Findings revealed a substantial increase in the number of patients with metastatic NSCLC receiving palliative care. Although the main form of palliative care delivery was the hospital-based program but in recent years, palliative care services have been received by more patients in multiple locations. In multivariable analyses, significant difference was noted in the receipt of palliative care based on sex, race, and region.
