Utility of MELD scoring system for assessing the prognosis of acute fatty liver of pregnancy
European Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Reproductive Biology Jul 04, 2019
Li P, et al. - Researchers investigated the prognostic value of Model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) in acute fatty liver of pregnancy (AFLP). In this retrospective study, they collected data of women diagnosed with AFLP in the third affiliated hospital of Sun Yat-Sen University and calculated their MELD score using measures from blood samples collected on admission. In predicting most of the perinatal complications of AFLP, the MELD score performed well with all the area under the receiver operating characteristic curves > 0.8. The perinatal complications included ascites, wound seroma, hepatic encephalopathy, DIC, sepsis, renal insufficiency, and stillbirth. MELD score ≥ 30 group more frequently experienced nearly all the maternal complications. Findings suggest the possible suitability of the MELD scoring system for assessing the prognosis of AFLP.
