Utility of mean platelet volume to predict the prevalence of coronary artery disease on coronary angiography in patients with stable angina

Coronary Artery Disease Nov 14, 2019

Lin Y, et al. - Among patients with stable angina, whether high mean platelet volume (MPV) has a predictive value for diagnosing stable coronary artery disease (CAD), was investigated in this study enrolling 491 patients suffering from chest pain who had selective coronary angiography for suspected CAD. Based on angiography, patients were categorized into the CAD group and non-CAD group. Demographic, laboratory, and angiographic data were analyzed. More probability of having CAD, lower platelet counts and higher hemoglobin A1c levels were found in patients with MPV in the highest tertile. A positive correlation of MPV with hemoglobin A1c was also observed. Higher MPV was detected in patients with CAD (n = 248) vs those without CAD (n = 243). In patients with stable angina, the prevalence of CAD on coronary angiography was predicted by the presence of high MPV, this may subsequently decrease unnecessary invasive coronary angiography.
