Utility of diagnostic mammography as the primary imaging modality for palpable lumps in women with almost entirely fatty breasts
American Journal of Roentgenology Feb 12, 2020
Linden OE, Hayward JH, Price ER, et al. - The study cohort recruited 323 cases assessed with mammography to evaluate the performance of diagnostic mammography alone for the evaluation of palpable symptoms in women with almost entirely fatty breast composition. All diagnostic mammograms conducted for palpable symptoms in women who had been appointed a breast density of “almost entirely fatty” over an 8-year period (2009–2017) at an academic breast center were retrospectively distinguished. The results indicated that mammography alone had high sensitivity and specificity in individuals with almost entirely fatty breast tissue presenting with palpable symptoms. For evaluation of palpable symptoms, the outcomes support that mammography alone may be sufficient in these women as long as density criteria are strictly used.
