Utility of a blood volume monitor in the management of anemia in dialysis by computing the total hemoglobin mass

Hemodialysis International Aug 15, 2019

Alayoud A, Belarabi M, Labrini F, et al. - Given that anemia results in dialysis may be influenced by the degree of interdialytic weight gain and ultrafiltration, researchers focused on the usefulness of a blood volume monitor (BVM) in the management of renal anemia as well as on its capability to prevent the variability of hematocrit and hemoglobin values (Hb) based on plasma volume by a simple method of monitoring the total hemoglobin mass (MtHb). At both the midweek treatment and the beginning-of-the-dialysis-week treatment, they obtained predialysis blood samples from 30 patients for measurement. They calculated MtHb as MtHb = Vb × Hb, where Vb represents the absolute blood volume defined by online dialysate dilution using an online hemodiafiltration machine including a relative BVM. The high utility of BVM in clinical practice was suggested for anemia management in dialysis by calculating the total Hb mass. Moreover, it could support better and more suitable evaluations of the factors affecting circulating Hb.
