Uterine morcellation and survival in uterine sarcomas
European Journal of Cancer Aug 23, 2018
Bretthauer M, et al. - In this study including all women in Norway diagnosed with uterine sarcoma between 1953 and 2012, researchers compared survival among those who had hysterectomy with vs without morcellation to test if morcellation impairs prognosis. They found that, in the morcellated group vs in the non-morcellated group, the sarcoma mortality was higher and age-adjusted 10-year uterine sarcoma survival was 32.2% vs 57.2%, respectively. All-cause 10-year survival was 32.2% in the morcellated group and 44.1% in the non-morcellated group. Overall, findings indicated that morcellation during hysterectomy caused impaired survival in patients with incidental uterine sarcoma. These results can guide shared decision-making in clinical practice.
