Using sternal angle as anatomic landmark for right internal jugular vein catheterization in pediatrics
Acta Anaesthesiologica Scandinavica Sep 23, 2019
Xu H, Zhu X, Li J, et al. - Researchers sought a direct method to guide central venous catheter position in children because, in some emergency conditions, many existing formulas (based on the patient's height, weight and/or age) are not applicable due to the unavailability of the required information. Enrollment of 80 patients aged 1 y to 10 y was done, and 75 were completed, including 50 males and 25 females. The inability to recognize the sternal angle or failure to use the right internal jugular vein approach was included in the exclusion criteria. They identified an anatomic landmark for guiding central venous catheter position in children. This landmark was the sternal angle, which showed utility as well as reliability for guiding catheter position in children. Quick and convenient placement of the catheter at a safety position in right internal jugular vein was enabled with the use of this landmark, particularly in some emergency conditions.
