Using coronary artery calcium scoring as preventative health tool to reduce the high burden of cardiovascular disease in Indigenous Australians
Heart, Lung, and Circulation Jul 28, 2019
Kempton HR, et al. - In this prospective longitudinal study including patients in regional Australia referred for computed tomography coronary angiography (CTCA), researchers used logistic regression and compared calcium score, as a measure of coronary artery disease burden in Indigenous and non-Indigenous patients. They found that Indigenous Australians suffered a higher burden of cardiovascular disease, independent of the higher rate of cardiovascular risk factors. In order to attenuate the rate of myocardial infarction and early death in Indigenous Australians, access to CTCA presents an opportunity. For the first time, an investigation of CTCA in an Indigenous Australian population was conducted. Furthermore, this work is identified as one of the first applying CTCA for an Indigenous population worldwide.
