Using cine-averaged CT with the shallow breathing pattern to reduce respiration-induced artifacts for thoracic cavity PET/CT scans
American Journal of Roentgenology Apr 06, 2019
Changlai SP, et al. - In this investigation, researchers examined the impact of the acquisition of cine-averaged CT (CACT) incorporated with the patient's shallow breathing pattern on improving registration and lesion quantification. For this investigation, 30 cancer patients were enrolled in routine PET/CT followed by thoracic region CACT. Calculations were made for the misalignment between PET/helical CT (HCT) and PET/CACT. According to findings, all lesions in the PET/HCT images showed a misalignment greater than 5 mm, whereas in the PET/CACT images only 33% of lesions showed a misalignment greater than 5 mm. Data reported that the mean percentage difference between the maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax) of CACT and that of HCT was 12%. Findings revealed that using the CACT technique and the shallow breathing pattern effectively lessens lesion misregistration and retrieves the underestimated SUVmax. The CACT method can be used for better management of cancer in the clinical practice of thoracic PET/CT.
