Usefulness of the Pediatric Appendicitis Score for assessing the severity of acute appendicitis in children
Pediatrics International Oct 30, 2019
Fujii T, et al. - Among pediatric acute appendicitis, researchers explored connections between the Pediatric Appendicitis Score (PAS) and pathological progression and disease severity. Seventy-two children who had surgery for acute appendicitis were retrospectively evaluated. Study participants were divided into groups: simple appendicitis (SA; n = 28) or complicated appendicitis (CA; n = 44). Findings revealed that there have been statistically significant differences between SA and CA in the PAS. A PAS cut-off value of 8 was indicated in the ROC curve. The data presented in this work showed a PAS ≥ 8 had a sensitivity of 73%, a specificity of 89%, PPV of 91%, and NPV of 68%. A PAS ≥ 8 was linked to significantly longer hospitalization and more complications than a PAS < 8. Overall, the authors concluded that PAS can be related to pathological progression and disease severity in appendicitis.
