Usefulness of serum procalcitonin as a marker for coexisting infection in patients with acute myocardial infarction
The American Journal of Cardiology Jun 19, 2018
Vitkon-Barkay I, et al. -Clinical manifestations of inflammatory responses are observed in a considerable proportion of patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) that are sometimes confused with a concomitant infection, so researchers investigated if serum procalcitonin (PCT) (known to be elevated in bacterial infections) can be used to rule-out bacterial infection in AMI patients. In this prospective, single center study, serum PCT demonstrated a better performance in distinguishing infected from non-infected AMI patients when vs CRP, fever and WBC. Serum PCT should be considered as an adjunct test when wondering if an empiric antibiotic should be given to an AMI patient demonstrating inflammatory signs.
