Usefulness of CT texture analysis in differentiating benign and malignant renal tumors

Denga Y, Soulec E, Cui E, et al. - Through a retrospective study conducted by texture analysis of pretreatment contrast-enhanced CT examinations in 354 histopathologically confirmed renal cell carcinomas (RCCs) and 147 benign renal tumors, researchers explicated visually imperceptible variations between benign and malignant renal tumors using CT texture analysis using filtration histogram based parameters. In RCC vs benign renal tumors, significantly higher entropy with fine spatial filter was noted. In RCC vs lipid-poor angiomyolipoma, entropy with fine and medium filters was greater. For prognosticating RCC, entropy > 5.62 had high specificity of 85.7%, but low sensitivity of 31.3%, respectively. Hence, in distinguishing RCC from lipid-poor angiomyolipoma, and chromophobe RCC from oncocytoma variations in entropy were considerate. To distinguish lesions that appear equivocal on visual evaluation or modify management in poor surgical candidates, this method could be beneficial.
