Use of video review to investigate technical factors that may be associated with delayed gastric emptying after pancreaticoduodenectomy
JAMA Nov 14, 2018
Jung JP, et al. - Researchers investigated the association of technical variables during robotic pancreaticoduodenectomy (RPD) with postoperative delayed gastric emptying (DGE) via conducting a retrospective study of technical assessment performed in all available videos (n = 192) of consecutive RPDs performed at a single academic institution from October 3, 2008, through September 27, 2016. Postoperative delayed gastric emptying was noted to be associated with technical variables, such as the angle of the gastrojejunal anastomosis, gastrostomy size, and surgical device style of gastrojejunal anastomosis. This suggests that for assessing perioperative outcomes, particularly delayed gastric emptying, video assessment of technical factors is a powerful, yet underused, tool. They suggest targeting specific technical factors during surgery to improve postoperative outcomes.
