Use of urinary balloon catheter to prevent postoperative bleeding after ultrasound-guided vacuum-assisted breast biopsy
The Breast Journal Oct 31, 2019
Lian ZQ, et al. - In the present study, researchers assessed the clinical impact of using a urinary balloon catheter to prevent postoperative bleeding following ultrasound-guided vacuum-assisted breast biopsy (VABB). Three hundred twenty-four patients who underwent ultrasound-guided VABB were randomized into the study group and control group from May 2016 to June 2018. In the study group, to prevent bleeding and hematoma, a urinary balloon catheter was inserted into the excision cavity. Compression with thorax pressure bandage was used for hemostasis in the control group. Postoperative ecchymosis and hematoma rates were 2.9% and 4.3% in the study group, 6.5% and 11.7% in the control group among patients with lesions ≤ 1.5 cm, but there was no statistically significant difference between the two groups. Postoperative ecchymosis and hematoma rates in the study group were significantly lower than in the control group among patients with lesions > 1.5 cm. Overall, the authors concluded that hemostasis with balloon urinary catheter is a safe and effective procedure for preventing postoperative bleeding following VABB.
