Use of tape strips to detect immune and barrier abnormalities in early-onset pediatric atopic dermatitis

JAMA Dermatology Oct 14, 2019

Guttman-Yassky E, Diaz A, Pavel AB, et al. - In this cross-sectional study involving 51 children (21 children [mean (SD) age was 1.7 (1.7) years] had moderate to severe atopic dermatitis {AD} with less than 6 months of disease duration and 30 children [mean (SD) age was 1.8 (2.0) years] did not have AD) younger than 5 years, researchers sought to evaluate a minimally invasive approach using tape strips to recognise skin biomarkers that can serve as a surrogate to biomarkers identified utilizing whole-tissue biopsies. Findings suggested that tape strips provide a minimally invasive option for serially assessing AD-associated cutaneous biomarkers and can be useful for monitoring pediatric AD therapeutic response and anticipating future course and comorbidities.
