BMJ Open Dec 10, 2019
Yonekura H, Ide K, Kanazawa Y, et al. - Researchers conducted the first and largest study investigating the prevalence and factors associated with preoperative hemostasis and ABO blood typing tests for children as these tests might describe low-value care. In this retrospective observational study performed using a nationwide insurance claims database in Japan, they included 13,018 patients (aged 1–17 years) who underwent common non-cardiac surgeries between April 2012 and March 2018 at 1,499 institutions. The analysis revealed the undertaking of preoperative hemostasis and ABO blood typing tests in a majority of children prior to common pediatric surgeries. Anesthesia, surgical type, and surgical setting were identified influencing the undertaking of the preoperative tests.
