Use of nonaspirin non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and risk of head and neck cancer: A nationwide case-control study
International Journal of Cancer Jul 09, 2019
de la Cour CD, et al. - In a register-based case-control study nested in the entire Danish population, researchers focused on the link between nonaspirin non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) use and risk of head and neck cancer (HNC). Overall 12,389 cases including Danish inhabitants (aged 30-84 years) with a histologically verified primary HNC diagnosis during 2000–2015 were studied. They divided cases into four groups of anticipated links with human papillomavirus (HPV), on the basis of literature, as strong, potential, no/weak and uncertain. Via risk-set-sampling, they selected 185,835 age- and sex-matched population controls. Findings revealed no link between ever-use of nonaspirin NSAIDs and the risk of HNC, with no apparent impact on the estimates by the anticipated HPV-link. However, an attenuated risk of HNC may be seen in relation to long-term consistent use.
