Use of indocyanine green fluorescence compared with radioisotope for sentinel lymph node biopsy in early-stage breast cancer: Systematic review and meta-analysis
American Journal of Surgery Feb 14, 2020
Goonawardena J, et al. - In view of the observed consideration for indocyanine green (ICG)-fluorescence based sentinel lymph node (SLN) detection in early-stage breast cancer, researchers performed a meta-analysis on SLN detection rates and sensitivity of ICG-fluorescence vs radioisotope (RI), to determine its clinical applicability. From PubMed and Scopus, full-text articles of women with early breast cancer who underwent SLN mapping using ICG and RI concurrently were systematically reviewed. The Mantel–Haenszel method was used to perform the meta-analysis. Inclusion of 2,301 patients from 19 studies was done. Findings revealed no significant difference in sentinel lymph node biopsy disclosure rates and sensitivity between indocyanine green and radioisotope. They identified dual mapping (indocyanine green and radioisotope) as better vs single mapping alone. Indocyanine green is suggested to be a possibly valuable complement to radioisotope or as an alternative when poor accessibility to radioisotope.
