Use of hepatocellular carcinoma surveillance in patients with cirrhosis: A systematic review and meta‐analysis
Hepatology Nov 25, 2020
Wolf E, Rich NE, Marrero JA, et al. - Among patients with cirrhosis, this study was intended to define surveillance use and the effectiveness of interventions to increase surveillance. Between January 2010 and August 2018, researchers conducted a systematic literature review applying the MEDLINE database to distinguish cohort studies assessing hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) surveillance receipt or interventions to increase surveillance in patients with cirrhosis. The results of this study indicated that in clinical practice, HCC surveillance remains underused, especially among patients with alcohol‐associated or NASH‐related cirrhosis and those not followed in subspecialty gastroenterology clinics. Interventions such as provider education, inreach including reminder systems, and population health outreach efforts can significantly increase HCC surveillance.
