Use of fertility preservation services in female reproductive-aged cancer patients
American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology May 23, 2019
Selter J, et al. - Using the MarketScan database, researchers determined rates and predictors of fertility preservation services among 18,781 women, including 386 cervical, 1372 colorectal, 246 lung, and 16,777 with breast cancer, who underwent surgery and chemotherapy from 2009-2016 in the United States. They examined services from 3 months before to 3 months after chemotherapy for evaluation for fertility-preservation, laboratory testing for fertility evaluation and fertility-preserving procedures. This study was limited by lack of information regarding cancer stage and desire for future fertility. In this nationwide sample, they identified only a small fraction of reproductive-aged female cancer patients receiving chemotherapy who were evaluated for fertility preservation or for undergoing fertility-preserving procedures. As per the multivariable model, patients with breast cancer, those in the northeast and in the younger age group, had more frequently used any fertility-preserving interventions.
