Use of emergency medication in adult patients with epilepsy: A multicentre cohort study from Germany
CNS Drugs Jul 20, 2018
Kadel J, et al. - In this questionnaire-based, retrospective survey, researchers assessed the use of emergency medication in adult patients with epilepsy. For this investigation, all adult epilepsy patients using epilepsy outpatient clinics of the university hospitals in Frankfurt and Marburg in 2015 were included. Results revealed that inappropriate benzodiazepines with slow absorption resulting from oral administration were prescribed in most cases. Oral lorazepam tablets, followed by buccal midazolam and rectal diazepam were the most frequently taken emergency drugs. According to the findings, inappropriate use of emergency medication at every seizure was reported by a substantial number of partaking patients.
