Use of e-cigarettes for nicotine, marijuana, and just flavoring among US youth
American Journal of Preventive Medicine Dec 19, 2019
Dai H, et al. - By analyzing 2017 Monitoring the Future survey, researchers investigated risk factors related to past-30-day self-reported vaping of nicotine, marijuana, and just flavoring among youth as well as the patterns (single, dual, and poly) of substances youth stated in their e-cigarettes. Of 14,560 participants included, 8.0% stated currently vaping just flavoring, followed by 7.4% vaping nicotine and 3.6% vaping marijuana. They observed an increased risk of vaping nicotine, marijuana, and just flavoring in youth who were in 12th and 10th grade (vs 8th grade), male (vs female), current smokers (vs noncurrent smokers), and current marijuana users (vs noncurrent users). The chance of reporting currently vaping was less in black non-Hispanics vs white non-Hispanics. A higher proportion of students stating vaping nicotine only and a lower proportion of students telling vaping just flavoring only was observed in relation to higher (vs lower) grade or increasing cigarette smoking intensity. A complex pattern of e-cigarette use was noted among youth. Youth described vaping substances potentially addictive beyond just flavoring. There is a requirement for strategies and interventions to decrease youth e-cigarette use.
