Use of blood biomarkers to screen for obstructive sleep apnea

Nature and Science of Sleep Jun 22, 2018

Fleming WE, et al. - In this multicenter prospective study, the researchers evaluated the association between obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and blood biomarkers, and tested the premise that combinations of markers provide a specific OSA signature with diagnostic screening value. It was observed that OSA was correlated with a specific signature cluster of biomarker changes in men. Findings suggested that concurrent elevations of glycated hemoglobin, C-reactive protein, and erythropoietin levels should cause a high suspicion of OSA, and might have value as an OSA screening tool. They reported that biomarker combinations correlated with OSA severity and, could help sleep centers in recognize and triage higher risk subjects for sleep study diagnosis and treatment.
