Colla JS, et al. - Researchers sought to determine the utility of bedside lung ultrasound (BLU) in the identification of early pulmonary findings associated with acute chest syndrome (ACS) in sickle cell disease (SCD) patients. Via performing a prospective, observational study of a convenience sample of SCD patients presenting to the Emergency Department (ED) for a pain crisis, they realized that in these patients, pulmonary abnormalities on BLU appear before chest X-ray, and highly suggest ACS.
