Use of a penicillin allergy screening algorithm and penicillin skin testing for transitioning hospitalized patients to first-line antibiotic therapy

The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology: In Practice Dec 16, 2017

Ramsey A, et al. - In this study, researchers tested the utility of a multidisciplinary intervention comprising the use of a penicillin allergy history algorithm (PAHA) and subsequent penicillin skin testing (PST) in transitioning hospitalized patients from second- to first-line antibiotic therapy. They found that this intervention facilitated the transition to β-lactam antibiotics. The applied approach was unique, as in it prioritized patients based on the use of second-line antibiotics, and then applied an algorithm to determine eligibility for PST.
