US prescription trends of antihistamines for atopic dermatitis, 2011‐2016

Pediatric Dermatology Dec 02, 2020

Garg S, Zhao J, Tegtmeyer K, et al. - Although recommendation against antihistamine use for primary treatment of atopic dermatitis (AD) has been made, current guidelines state favoring sedating antihistamines over non‐sedating antihistamines for relief of burdensome pruritus. Researchers here compared the use of antihistamines between dermatologists and non‐dermatologists via analyzing the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey. Relative to non‐dermatologists, dermatologists more frequently prescribe sedating vs non‐sedating antihistamines. Prescription of sedating antihistamines vs non‐sedating antihistamines was more frequently made for patients under 21 years old and Black patients. These findings highlight that physicians differ in prescribing practices for atopic dermatitis.
