US national trends in opioid-related hospitalizations among patients with cancer

Chua IS, et al. - Given the routine prescription of opioids for cancer-related pain, researchers sought for the prevalence of opioid-related hospitalizations among patients with cancer. These patients have estimated opioid addiction as high as 7.7%. Considering the wider opioid epidemic, patients are frequently provided with legitimate access to opioids by oncologists and palliative care clinicians while protecting them and the general public from the risks associated with prescribing these medications.
