US hospital type and proximity to mass shooting events
JAMA May 24, 2020
Myers SR, DeSimone JD Lorch SA, et al. - Researchers sought to determine the location of recent mass shooting events relative to nearest hospitals and trauma centers (TCs). As per federal statistics, the past decade showed a triple increase in mass shootings in the United States. The resources of local hospitals may be easily overwhelmed with these mass-casualty events. With an increase in the number of persons injured, even a well-prepared center is pushed beyond capacity. Despite the establishment of trauma systems throughout the United States to prioritize getting the right patient to the right place at the right time, travel distance, traffic, casualty volume, and injury severity often led to transport of patients to a hospital that is not a TC. Per their assumption, the nearest available hospitals to mass shooting events will commonly be non–trauma center (NTC) hospitals, where such patient loads are more likely to overwhelm capacity and advanced care options may be limited.
