Ursodeoxycholic acid in the prevention of gallstone formation after bariatric surgery: An updated systematic review and meta-analysis

Magouliotis DE, et al. - Researchers reviewed the available literature on obese patients treated with ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) in order to prevent gallstone formation after bariatric surgery. Findings suggested the efficacy of UDCA administration after bariatric surgery in preventing gallstone formation.
Methods
- Researchers performed a systematic literature search in PubMed, Cochrane library, and Scopus databases, in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines.
- Inclusion criteria was met by eight studies which incorporated 1355 patients.
Results
- As per random-effects meta-analysis, a lower incidence of gallstone formation was observed in patients taking UDCA.
- In the UDCA group, subgroup analysis indicated fewer cases of gallstone disease in relation to different bariatric procedures, doses of administered UDCA, and time from bariatric surgery.
- Both groups were similar regarding adverse events.
- Cholecystectomy was performed on fewer patients in UDCA group.
- There was no report of deaths.
