Urolithiasis: Comparison of diagnostic performance of digital tomosynthesis and ultrasound. Which one to choose and when?
European Journal of Radiology May 26, 2018
Sandhu MS, et al. - The diagnostic performance of digital tomosynthesis (DT) in detecting urolithiasis was assessed and compared with ultrasonography (USG), keeping standard volumetric multi-detector computed tomography (MDCT) as the reference. USG and DT were noted to have no statistically significant difference in terms of diagnosing urolithiasis. Compared to USG, DT performed significantly better in detecting ureteric calculi with a higher sensitivity. Hence, findings favored DT for initial evaluation of patients with suspected ureteric calculi. However, considering the strength of ultrasound in demonstrating associated signs as hydroureteronephosis, researchers suggest using DT and USG as complementary techniques in resolving these common clinical screnarios.
