Urinary TIMP-2 and MMP-2 are significantly associated with poor bladder compliance in adult patients with spina bifida
Neurourology and Urodynamics Sep 12, 2019
Peyronnet B, Richard C, Bendavid C, et al. - Researchers examined six urinary markers (nerve growth factor, brain-derived neurotrophic factor, matrix metalloproteinase 2 [MMP-2], tissue inhibitor metalloproteinase 2 [TIMP-2], transformation growth factor β-1, and prostaglandin 2) for their predictive values for adverse urodynamic features and for upper urinary tract damage in adult patients with spina bifida. In this single-center prospective trial of 40 patients, they noted a significant association of urinary TIMP-2 and MMP-2 with poor bladder compliance and a significant association of urinary TIMP-2 with upper urinary tract damage. Findings thereby indicate that in adult patients with spina bifida, extracellular matrix remodeling play a pathophysiological role in poor bladder compliance.
