Urinary metabolites and risk of coronary heart disease: A prospective investigation among urban Chinese adults

Nutrition, Metabolism & Cardiovascular Diseases Dec 17, 2019

Yoon HS, Yang JJ, Rivera ES, et al. - Researchers performed a nested case–control study to assess the link of urinary metabolites with coronary heart disease (CHD) risk among Chinese adults. Participants were 275 incident cases and 275 matched controls (127 pairs of men and 148 pairs of women). They measured 50 metabolites, using a predefined metabolomics panel, adjusted using urinary creatinine. A positive link of urinary tryptophan with incident CHD was revealed after adjusting for conventional CHD risk factors: OR (95% CI) for the highest vs lowest quartiles was estimated to be 2.02 in all participants. In people with dyslipidemia vs those without the condition, the tryptophan–CHD link was more evident. Significant links with CHD risk were not demonstrated by other metabolites in all study participants. Based on the findings, experts concluded a possible link of elevated urinary tryptophan with CHD risk among Chinese adults, particularly for those with dyslipidemia.
