Uric acid levels in adult patients with severe eating disorders
International Journal of Eating Disorders Dec 07, 2021
Watters A, Johnson RJ, Bauschka M, et al. - Serum uric acid (UA) levels were examined in patients with extreme forms of eating disorders, at admission and discharge, following weeks of nutritional rehabilitation and weight restoration.
A total of 160 patients diagnosed with anorexia nervosa restricting subtype (AN-R), AN binge-purge subtype (AN-BP), or avoidant restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) were included in this observational study.
Most patients with severe AN-R tended to show serum UA levels in the low-normal range, but not this was not evident in AN-BP.
However, nutritional intake and weight gain resulted in an increase in levels.
Checking UA levels on admission may be clinically valuable for patients with eating disorders.
