Uric acid is linked to cardiometabolic risk factors in overweight and obese youths
Journal of Hypertension Sep 13, 2018
Lurbe E, et al. - Since high levels of serum uric acid have been shown to be associated with the risk of cardiovascular disease in observational studies, researchers studied how uric acid correlates with individual cardiometabolic risk factors, and their level of clustering in overweight and moderately obese youth (333 Caucasians of both sexes [149 women], from 5−18 years of age). Participants were examined regarding anthropometric parameters, office and 24-hour blood pressure measurements, and metabolic profile, including HDL-cholesterol, triglycerides, insulin, HOMA index and uric acid. A positive link between uric acid and blood pressure, insulin and triglycerides was observed. A relevant clustering of metabolic risk factors was noted with the increase in uric acid levels, while elevated blood pressure was found to be the risk factor less frequently present.
