Uric acid, impaired fasting glucose and impaired glucose tolerance in youth with overweight and obesity
Nutrition, Metabolism & Cardiovascular Diseases Oct 16, 2020
di Bonito P, Valerio G, Licenziati MR, et al. - Researchers conducted this cross-sectional study to explore the connection between uric acid (UA), impaired fasting glucose (IFG), impaired glucose tolerance (IGT), insulin resistance (IR) and low insulin sensitivity (IS) in youth with overweight/obesity (OW/OB). The sample consisted of 2,248 youths with OW/OB (aged 5 to 17 years). According to results, age, BMI z-score, 2-hour post-load glucose, HOMA-IR and whole-body IS index, increased across sex-quintiles of UA while fasting did not. Rates of IGT and low IS in youth with OW/OB increased progressively across quintiles of UA. IFG and IR, on the contrary, were correlated only with the highest quintile of UA. The data show that UA is a biomarker of impaired glucose metabolism that is predominant in post-challenge rather than fasting conditions.
