Uric acid and risk of new-onset metabolic syndrome, impaired fasting glucose and diabetes mellitus in a general Italian population: Data from the Pressioni Arteriose Monitorate E Loro Associazioni study

Bombelli M, et al. - Researchers sought to verify the data suggesting serum uric acid (SUA) may predict future development of metabolic abnormalities in Mediterranean populations. At baseline and 10 years later, waist circumference, office blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, serum triglycerides, serum HDL cholesterol and SUA were measured in 3200 individuals (25–74 years) randomly selected from the residents of Monza (North Italy). SUA increase was noted to be associated with an increased risk of developing impaired fasting glucose. In the population fraction with age above the median value, SUA increase was associated with metabolic syndrome and diabetes mellitus, in addition.
