Urate and risk of Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia: A population-based study
Alzheimer's and Dementia May 07, 2019
Scheepers LEJM, et al. - Researchers ascertained if serum urate (sU) was correlated with risk of late-life dementia. A population-based sample of 1,462 women between the ages of 38 and 60 was examined in 1968–1969 and followed up over 44 years. The data presented in this work showed a higher sU was related to lower risk for dementia, Alzheimer's disease, and vascular dementia during follow-up. The study findings support the hypothesis that sU, regardless of the dementia subtype, is protective against the development of dementia, which may have significant implications for hyperuricemia in gout patients in the treatment of dementia and treatment goals.
