Injury Aug 25, 2018
Reid CM, et al. - In this multicenter, retrospective study, researchers determined the frequency and distribution of upper extremity injuries sustained from ATV accidents. They found that 18% of injuries involved the shoulder, 20% arm, 16% elbow, 18% forearm, 40% wrist, and 24% hand. Also, they reported that 73% of injuries were fracture/dislocations, 4% nerve injury, 2% vascular injury, and 36% soft tissue injury. Fractures/dislocations were documented as the most common upper extremity injuries experienced in ATV injuries. More than one anatomical location involving injuries were reported in one third of patients. Safety equipment was worn by less than half of the patients, this finding calls for increased awareness and enacted of measures to improve safety and prevent accidents.
