Unplanned readmission after outpatient laparoscopic cholecystectomy

HPB Oct 03, 2019

Moghadamyeghaneh Z, et al. - Using NSQIP database, researchers examined unplanned readmission after laparoscopic cholecystectomy. They used multivariate analysis to identify the predictors of readmission. A total of 117,248 patients were found to have undergone outpatient laparoscopic cholecystectomy in 2014–16. Of these 3,315 had unplanned readmission. Overall, 2.8% of outpatient laparoscopic cholecystectomy patients are readmitted to the hospital. After one day of hospitalization, most of these patients are discharged. The most common reasons for readmission were unspecified symptoms like pain and vomiting. After adjustment, factors like a renal failure on dialysis, discharge to a facility, and steroid use for a chronic condition, were linked to unplanned readmission. Readmission strongly influences the comorbid factors of patients and is not a reliable measure of hospital quality and surgical care.
