Unhealthy behavior and risk of hypertension: The CONSTANCES population-based cohort
Journal of Hypertension Oct 06, 2019
Cherfan M, Vallée A, Kab S, et al. - Researchers undertook a cross-sectional analysis to determine the individual and combined relations between unhealthy behaviors (heavy alcohol drinking, sedentary-level physical activity, low/medium dietary adherence and overweight/obesity) and hypertension (HTN) by utilizing data from the CONSTANCES study. Based on standardized operational procedures, they obtained blood pressure measurements, and also recorded dietary adherence after the dietary approach to stop HTN diet. This study included 86,448 volunteers. HTN prevalence was 31.1%. An increased HTN prevalence was reported among both sexes in correlation with low/medium dietary adherence vs high adherence, overweight/obesity vs normal BMI, heavy alcohol intake vs moderate or never, and with sedentary physical activity level vs high physical activity in women only. Increased odds of HTN were reported in relation to the combination of many unhealthy behaviors. Overall, a strong association of individual as well as combined unhealthy lifestyle factors with HTN was evident in this large population-based study.
