Unexpected results of a randomized quality improvement program for children with severe asthma

Journal of Asthma Feb 16, 2020

Mosquera RA, Avritscher EBC, Yadav A, et al. - Researchers performed this study at their center, to investigate if treatment days outside the home among children with severe asthma receiving comprehensive care (CC) can be reduced via an asthma intervention program. They randomized children suffering from severe asthma to CC alone (n = 29) or CC plus the asthma intervention program (n = 34) which incorporated collaboration with pharmacists and school nurses, motivational interviewing, and tracing the one-second forced expiratory volume at home. Doubling of telephone calls between the staff and families was noted as a consequence of asthma intervention program. According to the findings, no reduction in days of healthcare outside home and school absenteeism was brought about by a multi-component intervention program implemented in children with severe asthma, and rather, it may have increased days of healthcare outside home and school absenteeism in this patient population.
